Music to Spin to

Everybody has their favorite music to spin to. What's yours? Send us an email listing your fave spinning music. We'd love to share it here. Below find songs/albums/playlists from folks that regularly spin with us:

  • DJ's Fire Playlist
  • Mike - Spinning to to live druming is simply the best. Short of that I have a Drumming Playlist.
I also like anything by Joe Satriani or similar. Showing my age I also like 80's Funk, New Wave and even Disco (try not to roll your eyes - I will not burden you with those playlists). I also have a playlist of general songs that feature "fire", "spinning", "dancing" or some other relevant term included:
    • Drumming Playlist:
      • X-Tribe – Drum Circle (Excellent)
      • Mickey Hart – At the Edge (good but uneven - sometimes too quiet/plaintive at points)
      • Mickey Hart – Global Drum Project (same as above but less so)
      • Mickey Hart – Planet Drum (ditto)
      • Blue Man Group – Audio (Excellent)
      • Professor Trance – Dance Your Animal (Very Good, but can get redundant)
      • Professor Trance – Medicine Trance (Again very good, but definitely redundant – one song is like 30 minutes long)
      • Professor Trance and the Energizers – Shaman’s Breath (Very Good)
      • Brent Lewis – Drum Sex (Excellent)
      • Brent Lewis – Jungle Moon (Also good)
      • Brent Lewis – Like a Drum (Most of Brent’s stuff is good to spin to)
      • James Asher – Feet In Soil (Very Good, mostly)
      • Spirit of the Drums – Firedance (Very good, but quiet at points)
      • Greg Ellis – Kala Rupa (Fantastic drummer, but this is not for everyone, may be too esoteric)
      • Glen Velez – Rhythms of the Chakras (Also good drumming, but a bit esoteric in places)
      • Mishlen Linden and Loius Martinie – Ritual Drumming (somewhat more accessible than the above 2)
      • Layne Redmond and Tommy Brunjes – Trance Union (Excellent, but has contemplative moods/moment so not for everyone)
      • Compilation - Mondo Beat: Masters of Percussion (Most of the tracks are fun)
      • Compilation – Global Meditation (Interesting mix, many tracks work for spinning, some don’t as well)
      • Anjey Satori – Ethnic Drums (Good)
      • Biakuye Percussion Group – Self Titled (Great use of vibes along with drumming, most tracks good to spin to)
    • Joe Satriani:
      • Surfing with the Alien (Excellent, open, electric, sweeping, neoclassic guitar riffs and runs – his trademark)
      • Is There Love in Space (ditto, a strong return to the above)
      • Crystal Planet (ditto again, but a bit stronger “In your face” at times)
      • Dreaming #11 (the EP that put him on the map, think of it as a short precursor to Surfing with the Alien)
      • The Extremist ( very bright, strong, well matured composition, IMO a “recovery” from Flying in a Blue Dream )
      • Self Titled (slightly grunge, still very good)
      • Engines of Creation (“mechanical”, persistent grooves sometimes with grunge emphasis, sometimes trance-beat, excellent but a bit different)
      • Not of this Earth (In the style of the first entries, but somewhat more experimental, and not as matured)
      • Flying in a Blue Dream (label pushed him to make this more “main stream”, some of it works, some of it just doesn’t. Also, singing is not his strong point.)
      • Time Machine (“Greatest Hits and More…” type compilation – tracks are… oddly chosen making it very uneven. If you like Joe, skip the hits and get one of the better albums).
